Dan Martin: Necessity is the mother of invention for Higher Ed
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce)’s announcement that £449m is to be slashed from university budgets this year has led to much debate about the impact that cost-cutting measures will have on individual HEIs and the sector as a whole.

But now is not the time for navel gazing. There is a real opportunity for HEIs to rethink how they do things, and innovate in order to raise income, implement efficiencies, and engage with their students.

Jeremy Davis: Books vs eBooks: a war of distraction
There is of course much debate, discussion and discourse in publishing circles about the importance and impact of eBooks. As ever with breakthrough developments, opinion is mostly polarised, as exemplified by an event I attended a while back for publishers entitled “Digitise or Die”. On the one hand we have those who believe that eBooks represent the future of books (“content” seems such a cold word to use) – an opportunity for publishers to find new markets and new profits, and an opportunity for more people to read, to digest, to think, which at the end of the day is what literature is all about, isn’t it? An opportunity to continue the democratisation of knowledge that began with Gutenberg nearly 600 years ago.

Chris Thorn: Is the future of the book written in the iPad?
Although the iPad is surely going to be a popular way to watch video, play games, surf the web etc., what I am really interested in is what it means for the future of the book.

Carl Edwards: The Economist helps move Augmented Reality closer to the mainstream
Here at Chameleon we have been banging the drum for a while about augmented reality. Most recently, at a personal level, at an IWMW2009 barcamp held at the University of Essex.

Whilst augmented reality requires a sophisticated technological infrastructure to work, the 'additional' technology to make it work is itself relatively simple and the potential for new applications huge. What makes it possible is that the 'sophisticated technological infrastructure' not only exists but is both mainstream and taken for granted: mobile internet and telephony; GPS satellite and radio technology; portable camera and display devices - all rolled into one.

Now its good to see the technology featured in the latest Economist Technology Quarterly: http://www.economist.com/printedition/displaystory.cfm?story_id=14299602

No, the article has nothing to do with us!

However, hopefully the Economist article will bring augmented reality out of the future-tech wilderness to the attention of a wider, more business-minded and entrepreneurial mainstream audience.

...and they can come to us to have a go on our drum!
