Opportunity Fund knocks for Chameleon (25/07/2002)
London-based e-solutions company Chameleon Net has won the contract to build a unique new online library for articles about rubbish and recycling.
The New Opportunities Fund, a National Lotteries distributor, have provided the funding for the new library which will provide a repository for hundreds of texts, articles and papers all connected with the issues of waste, recycling and sustainability.
Chameleon's Operations Director, Chris Thorn, stated, "We are excited about the project because of the high degree of technical sophistication that will drive the site. The online library will use all the latest digitisation, indexing and searching techniques to allow the general public to easily find the most relevant documents to their enquiry".
Suzie Peleg, the consortium's project manager said "The library will become the home to all the study and practical material relating to the three R's - that is, recycling, reducing and re-using. Chameleon Net were chosen as the technical developer of the site because of their project management skills, technical capabilities and 'can-do' attitude.
The site, www.wasteonline.org.uk, will go live with several hundreds documents available for viewing, and will eventually be home to many thousands. The consortium had rigid technical standards relating to document storage, indexing and retrieval; these dictate that the underlying document protocol will be XHTML (and thus fundamentally application independent).
As well as building all the technical infrastructure and software for the site, Chameleon Net's remit includes advising on the digitisation process and the application of the Dublin Core Metadata standard (which specifies eleven key classification criteria) to ensure documents can easily be uploaded and found by the public.
Chris Thorn commented "The final part of our work will be to create a content management system that will allow the client's non-technical staff to update the web site housing the on-line library. We will also be engaged in building seamless links to the library from the websites of other interested parties and affiliates."
